I am always keen to try new lentils and this turned out really well.
Ingredients:
| 1 | cup | red lentils (whole) rinsed |
| 1 | small | onion (red) chopped finely |
| 1 | large | tomatoes (plum) chopped finely |
| 1/2 | inch | ginger minced |
| 3 | clove | garlic minced |
| 3 | chiles (green) chopped finely | |
| to taste | salt | |
| 1/4 | teaspoon | turmeric |
| 1 | tablespoon | coriander powder |
| 2 | tablespoon | canola oil |
| 1/4 | bunch | cilantro chopped finely |
Directions:
1) Put sabut masoor daal in a saucepan with 3 cups of water and salt and place over medium to medium high heat. Bring to a boil, uncovered, Then partially cover the saucepan and reduce flame to medium low/low and let the dal cook. This should take approximately half hour. Alternately, you could cook the dal in a pressure cooker. It should take about 4 whistles for it to get done.
2) In the meantime, heat the oil in a pan. Add the minced ginger and garlic and saute it till the paste starts to turn light brown. Add chopped onions, and saute till it starts to brown.
3) Add the tomatoes , chilies ,turmeric powder and coriander powder to the mix and and fry till the oil starts to separates from it.
4) Add this mixture into the almost cooked dal,and let it simmer for a few minutes. Adjust the salt and other seasoning at this time.
5) Garnish the dal with cilantro and serve hot with plain white rice. Enjoy!
